Söndag Jazz does its grand finale of the summer with great live sets: Mark De Clive-Lowe & Bembe Segue (UK), Nen Brothers and Felix Zenger, with djs A. Myllykoski, Lovroc & Ilkka Laine. Later in the night, the musicians start to jam - we invite musicians to join & play along. Event starts at 4 pm and goes on til midnight (at least). Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) is a NZ musician and producer based in the UK and at the forefront of the global beats, jazz and soul community. He’s a devastating live performer creating studio production on stage from scratch using drum machines, keyboards and effects – live remixes created on stage for each and every gig. As well as performances at clubs, festivals and parties worldwide, he’s on over 200 releases for Masters At Work Records, Verve Records, Impulse Records and collaborating with as diverse a range of artists as Lauryn Hill, Jody Watley, UK soul don Omar, Bugz in the Attic, Dego (4Hero), percussionist Sammy Figueroa (Miles Davis), bass player Pino Palladino (D’Angelo/The Who), DJ Spinna, Leon Ware, Dame Shirley Bassey and plenty more, MdCL is one of the most innovative producers and live performers you'll find anywhere.
Half New Zealander, half Japanese musician/producer Mark de Clive-Lowe has been on the music journey since starting piano when he was four. Classical piano lessons, jazz for playing pleasure and hip hop and soul on the stereo gave Mark the diverse foundation that his eclectic style has developed from.
mbar gig is based on Mark's FREESOUL SESSIONS clubnite and releases - a fully improvised show with Mark constructing beats and full productions live on stage with a rotating cast of beat, soul and jazz musicians and vocalists and THE POLITIK - a new collaboration between Bembé Segué and Mark. Mark and Bembe have been collaborating on a variety of projects for almost five years, yet The Politik is their first joint project. “We really found kindred creative spirits in each other” says Mark, “whether it’s soul, jazz, hip hop, afrobeat or avant garde we’re on similar pages... We saw this as being a chance for us to bring together the things we love and have fun with... The Politik has been a totally organic process”.
The other half of The Politik is the incomparable Bembe Segue, whose intoxicating, flirty vocals have won her huge praise amongst UK’s tastemakers and have lead to collaborations with a plethora of diverse people and styles - Pharaoh Sanders, 4Hero, Finn Peters, Silhouette Brown, and Ty, as well as leading her own 15 piece cosmic jazz funk outfit.
Founded in 2010, Nen Brothers fuses beats from Brazil, West Africa and European dance floors with jazz improvisation and soulful melodies. Special guest in August with the band is New York based Brazilian sax player Felipe Salles. Vocalist for Nen Brothers is London based highly talented Sara Sayed. Compositions and keyboards are by Samuli Mikkonen, while fatty rooted groove is created by Senegalian drummer Ousseynou Mbaye. At mbar, instead of Salles, Jaska Lukkarinen plays sax.
Felix Zenger needs no introduction having done great performances at mbar before. One of the world's snappiest beat boxers, multilinear organic sund machine he is, will leave no-one cold during Sunday evening at mbar terrace. Line-up:
